A Study of Family Attitude on Epilepsy and the Family Dynamic


Abstract
This study intended to understand family attitude to the epileptic patient and the.family dyn. ic. 159 parents of epileptic patients belong to Rose Club in Wonju Christian Hospital was interview -d by
the author with prepared questionaire which was composed with series of questions, family opinion ? bout.
epilepsy, family attitude to the patient, and the family communication and dynamics.
The result were summerized as follows; ,
1. The family did not have much knowledge about epilepsy (50.9%), and considered the cause of epi epsy be shocked something (29.3%), and opinion about prognosis of treatment is probably good (49., %), but had a doubt about the complete cure (38.3%).
2. Family had shock (33.2%), deny (25.0%), despair (13.6%) when diagnosed that the child has epilepsy, continued deny even to take treatment (10.7%). Whenpatient suffering attacks, family experie iced despair-frustrate (23.3%), pity (14.5%), anxiety-panic (12.2%) and rage-hate (11.7%) of hostile reac ton.
Family communicated with indirect word about seizure, such as euphemism (34.0%), proverb (214%) instead of direct term of epilepsy.
3. Family made effort to rational cope with the epileptic patient (56.0%), but manifested to overprr ect tendency (35.1%). Parents feel patient is the most close relationship with themselves (40.3%), but . ve ambivalent feeling (67.9%) and psychological rejection (60.3%).
The parents took the responsibility of patients life, being worried about, "Patient future after d; ath of parent (28.2%)".
4. Parents were anxious about the behaviour and attitude change (67,4%) of epileptic patients after o set
of epileptic seizure. The most nagative change is the personality (34.4%) recognizing as introvert, s . rp,
stubborn, passimistic, ego-centered, but compliant and submissive.
5. Parents did not communicate about epilepsy with patient (31.4%), tending to hide illness patient hims - f.
If communicate, it was not discussed openly and directly, causing the loss of family integration.

6. Patients illness influenced on family dynamics, mother is the most role responser in the family mem, -1 ,
feels very heavy burden by the epileptic patient. All of the family member involved in medical p o
blems of the patients, and manifested family pain, suffered love and well-being of the whole fame ly.
